Distinguished leaders from around the world, including Charlot Magayi, Sonia Dunlop, and Otto Canon, gathered at the iconic House of Lords in London for the Global Sustainability Summit. The summit, held on March 28th, 2024, focused on harnessing renewable energy for climate action, drawing insights from renowned experts in the field.
Moderated by Prof Nicole Hakim, the panel session provided a platform for engaging discussions on the critical role of renewable energy in mitigating climate change and advancing global sustainability goals.
Charlot Magayi, Founder of Mukuru Clean Stoves, shared insights into innovative clean energy solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy access in underserved communities. Her expertise shed light on the transformative impact of clean cooking technologies in improving public health, enhancing livelihoods, and combating climate change. She also talked about the distribution of eco-friendly cooking stoves in rural areas.
Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council, underscored the immense potential of solar energy in driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. She highlighted recent advancements in solar technology and policy frameworks, emphasizing the need for greater investment and collaboration to accelerate the deployment of solar solutions worldwide.
She reiterates that to facilitate a nature-positive energy transition, the solar industry continues to develop innovative ways that available land can be used for solar PV installations. It can reduce the impact on nature including Agri-PV and sustainable agricultural practices, Floating PV and rooftop and BIPV.
She also said there is a need to make sure the legislation is in place and the recycling is in place as well as the financing so that we can deploy both renewable and sustainable energy sustainably.
Otto Canon, Sustainability Consultant at CleanCyclers, brought a fresh perspective to the discussion, advocating for a holistic approach to renewable energy adoption that integrates principles of the circular economy. He emphasized the importance of designing energy systems that minimize waste, maximize resource efficiency, and promote resilience in the face of climate change impacts.
The panel session also featured contributions from global delegates representing diverse sectors, including government, academia, industry, and civil society. Attendees engaged in lively discussions on topics such as renewable energy policy, financing mechanisms, technology innovation, and community engagement strategies.
